High School Careers in Medicine Program

The High School Careers in Medicine Workshop (HSCMW) is designed to promote interest in the health sciences among Miami Dade County Public Schools rising high school seniors from underrepresented backgrounds. Participants will engage in a learning environment that nurtures their curiosity and provides them with focused instruction along with academic and college counseling, and mentoring.

The HSCMW is a seven-week, non-residential program that runs from Monday, June 8 – Friday, July 24, 2020 on the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine campus. Classroom instruction will be provided in select science courses from the pre-med curriculum, and college-prep curriculum. Classes include anatomy and cellular molecular biology, language arts, sociocultural anthropology, and a course in the college application process, all of which focus on health careers.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Underrepresented minority in medicine which include: African American, Latino-Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander AND/OR students from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds (such as first generation, single parent or low income household)
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • High school junior entering senior year in 2020
  • Earned a B+ or higher in Chemistry and Biology
  • Aspire to enter the health and/or medical profession
  • Minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0
  • Proof of health insurance required upon acceptance

Application Requirements

  • Personal Statement (minimum of 400 words)
    • Upload your personal statement explaining why you wish to participate in the High School Careers in Medicine Workshop. Be sure to highlight your personal and professional goals and any personal attributes you have that would be deemed desirable for a career in healthcare and/or medicine.
  • Official Transcript
  • Copy of government issued ID or school ID card
  • Proof of free/reduced lunch provided by your school (if applicable)

IMPORTANT: Letters of recommendation should be submitted on official letterhead and at least one letter must come from a science teacher. The Guidance Counselor Recommendation Form must be completed by your CAP Advisor, Guidance Counselor, or a similar official. All letters of recommendation and the Guidance Counselor Recommendation Form must be emailed directly to the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement at
